Newtown Hooked Arts

NEWTOWN HOOKED ART SHOWS

PROSPECTUS

"Pushing the Limits: New Expressions in Hooked Art" will be judged from digital images on CD, deadline August 1, 2011. We present an opportunity for artists to try new ideas and broaden the perception of rug hooking—try something new—push the limits! We encourage originality, innovative use of materials, sculptural and three-dimensional forms.

Requirements: Entry fee is $50 for up to 3 entries. Work must be designed and hooked by entrant. There are no size limitations to enter, but size considerations may be a factor in exhibiting at certain venues. All work must include some form of rug hooking technique and must have been completed after October, 2009.

Not Eligible: Patterns, kits or work done in a class or under the supervision of a teacher. Collaborations are acceptable if all participants take part in the design and execution of the work. It is not acceptable for one person to design the work and another to execute it.

Calendar:

August 1, 2011: Deadline for arrival of entry materials
August 15, 2011: Notices of Acceptance sent
August 28, 2011: Deadline for arrival of accepted work and payment. Work received without payment will not be included.
September 27, 2011: Artwork to be returned to artist

Entry Fee: $50 for up to 3 entries.

Please make checks payable to: HERITAGE PRESERVATION TRUST, INC.
Visa and MasterCard also accepted. Download entry form.

Digital Photos: For each piece entered, 2 color images are required: 1 full view and 1 detail. Detail must enable jurors to evaluate construction characteristics of the work, including the hooking portion. Please include all entries on one disk. Photos should be in jpg format 4”x6” at 300 dpi .

Information Sheet: Please print or type the following information on a sheet of paper.

1. artist’s name
2. title of entry
3. measurement in inches
4. description of artwork submitted, 100 words or less for each entry. If you feel you would like to describe your work in more detail, please give us additional information which will help jurors to better evaluate the work.
5. artist’s statement, 100 words or less. Statement should describe the work and concept only, no biographical information.

Please enclose A COPY OF YOUR CD (do not send original). Entry materials will not be returned.

Entries which are not clearly and accurately represented by jpgs will not be accepted. It is in your best interest to use a professional photographer and photograph the piece on a plain background, which does not distract from your work.

Notification of Acceptance: Notification of Acceptance will be sent not later than August 15, 2011. If your work is accepted, we will ask you to sign our written release for permission to photograph your piece for publication, in addition to the aforementioned artist statement and description of work.

Upon Acceptance:  You are now part of an exciting group!  We distribute our CDs to many venues and galleries, and make every effort to interest them in mounting contemporary hooked fiber art shows.  We now act as a clearing house for contemporary hooked fiber art, and offer you publicity and exposure which would not otherwise be available to you as an individual.  Curators will be able to see what is available to them, and may even contact you for more of your work than is shown on the CD they receive.  Gallery curators will make their own decisions on themes, selected pieces, dates, etc. and contact you directly—from information provided to them by us. Your work is part of a select group of contemporary hooking artists who are highly motivated to stretch their creativity.

Our operating costs dictate that we charge each entrant $175, to cover our marketing expenses.  This fee is due on notification of acceptance.

Jurors’ Choice Award: Jurors will choose the piece they feel best exemplifies the requirements. The award is presented for excellence in innovation, design, concept and execution. All accepted work will be professionally photographed and a compact disc will be produced. All accepted entrants will receive a complimentary copy of the CD. The CD will contain all accepted entrants’ work, along with information on the artist and the piece. We will send the CD to museums and galleries that we feel might take an interest in “New Expressions in Hooked Art.”

Shipping: If your professionally photographed work is selected for a gallery show, please be sure to include any special hardware, instructions, etc. Send work in sturdy, re-useable boxes.

NOTE: International artists should check with shipper regarding import/export regulations and fees, AND ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY FEES ASSESSED BY EITHER COUNTRY.

Permission To Publish: Submission of a work of art to this competition and the artist’s signature on the entry form shall be understood to constitute an agreement on the part of the artist with all the conditions set forth and shall grant the Heritage Preservation Trust, Inc., sponsors of Newtown Hooked Art Shows, the rights to reproduce and distribute the images through print and electronic media for promotion of the shows and entrants. Artists will retain all copyrights on their work and honor costs outlined in this Prospectus.
